When you want to set goals, you make sure they are:

SMART

Specific – Measurable – Attainable – Relevant – Time-Bound

This is widely considered a safe way to progress and achieve your goals.

Now let me ask you this: Do you believe Christopher Columbus used the SMART technique when he decided to sail west and discovered the Americas?

Coaching is a field where there is space for discovery, yet at the same time measurements are a necessity. For instance, Columbus prepared everything before sailing. He knew it was going to be a long journey, he planned as best as he could. During his journey, he regularly measured exactly where he was.

However, measurements should not become the goal; it is simply a tool that helps you reach your destination.
